Keeping your Airstream Caravel Secure

Oct. 29 2019 Miscellaneous By ___

Your Airstream Caravel is the key to some of your best camping experiences. With a compact frame and lightweight build, they’re easy to use, while still providing you with all the comforts of a modern RV. It would be devastating to lose your trailer to thieves, both financially and emotionally. That’s why Airstream of Utah has provided some tips for keeping your trailer secure and safely in your possession. Check out our guide below and let us know if you need more help securing your RV. We’re in Salt Lake City, Utah and welcome all those from Park City and Provo.

Parking Your Trailer

Sometimes, something as simple as where you park your Airstream Caravel trailer can help reduce the risk of theft. When you’re out camping, if possible, try to find a spot that’s removed from the main road. The farther a thief has to travel to get to your RV, the less likely they are to hit it.

You don’t want to be too removed from the main camping area, though. If there’s a community of other RVers around you, there are more eyes to spot suspicious activity and deter criminals.

How you park your trailer can also make it harder to hook up a truck and drive off with it. If you get a wheel jockey, you can maneuver your Caravel without the assistance of a tow vehicle. This way, you can point the hitch away from the road.

When you’re at home, the best place for your trailer is an enclosed, secure area. This can be a barn or garage or even a storage unit. If none of these options are possible at the very least, you’ll want to pull your Caravel up onto your property, in the yard or on the driveway. Don’t leave it out on the street. This makes it more vulnerable to theft and can also be illegal in many areas.

Securing Your Airstream Caravel

Make sure all doors and windows are secure when there’s no reason to leave them unlocked. This includes every time you leave the trailer, but can also include times when you’re inside for a while, especially at night.

We also recommend getting a hitch lock. This prevents a stranger from hooking up your trailer to their tow vehicle and driving off with it.

One of the most secure steps you can take--albeit, one of the most expensive--is to get a security system. Even with the extra money spent, many RV owners feel it’s worth it.

Reducing Temptations

When you park your car in a large lot, it’s good to take any valuables with you or find a way to hide them while you’re gone. This way, someone isn’t tempted to break in and rob you, even if they leave the car behind.

The same concept applies to RVs. When you’re not using valuables, put them away where they can’t be seen. This includes jewelry and electronics. Draw your curtains or blinds when you’re not letting in the sunshine so no one’s tempted to peek in. For particularly valuable items, like ownership documents and firearms, you can get a safe.

Other Tips

Some steps aren’t about preventing theft, but about locating your trailer after it’s been taken. There are tracking devices you can hook up to your smartphone to help you locate a missing item (in this case, your Caravel). Other tracking or tagging methods can be done through local law enforcement.

Also, something as simple as individualizing your Caravel can help you prove it’s yours. Things like wallpaper, etchings, paint jobs, and more offer easy identification that’s hard to remove.
