Tips for Your Airstream Trailer Restoration Project

Apr. 26 2019 Miscellaneous By ___

Just because you buy your Airstream trailer a certain way, doesn’t mean that has to be the end-all be-all look of the model. There are lots of Airstream owners who buy a basic model and then do a little work of their own to make it a place that they can call home. If this sounds like something you’d like to try, check out some of the tips we’ve provided below and then stop by Airstream of Utah to get some one-on-one advice on Airstream restoration in Utah. We proudly serve Salt Lake City, Park City, Provo, and Ogden.

Think Realistically

Firstly, you should decide ahead of time what you’re capable of handling, and what you’ll probably work toward in the future. Some restoration tasks require more special skill training than others and some models might be too much for you to tackle. When you come to Airstream of Utah, you can be sure that the models you’re looking at come in decent shape to begin with, but if you go somewhere else, you might run into more damaged or older RVs. Things like water damage, electrical problems, and plumbing issues are probably going to require serious skill, and if you don’t feel you’re at that point, then maybe shoot for something simpler.

Ask About the Camper

When you’re getting serious about a particular model, make sure you gather as much information on it as you can. This should include maintenance records, information on building materials, the general shape of the trailer, and anything else you can get your hands on. This will probably be a combination of talking with the seller and doing your own research.

Making the Plan

When you’ve chosen an Airstream trailer to restore, it’s time to plan out what you’re going to do. Start by assessing which parts of the trailer must be fixed, like damaged areas or areas that are simply worn out.

Then consider what you’re presented with, and where you want to go. Would you like to restore the trailer to its former glory? Or would you like to create something new? This can be a surprisingly big question, so give it some thought. Check out some finished products online for inspiration. When you’ve settled on a plan, make a list of things that need to be upgraded in order for your vision to become a reality.

Painting

A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for the look and feel of an Airstream trailer. Get as simple or as creative with this as you like, but it’s definitely a basic necessity for all restoration projects. Try to plan to do this after any other tasks that might scuff up the walls. You can also throw up some wallpaper for a fun accent.

Furniture

Old furniture, or simply bland furniture, might present some challenges in an RV. Most furniture is bolted down so it doesn’t move around when you’re in transit. If you want to replace it, you’ll need to find a way to pull it out of the floor. Another important thing to keep in mind is your space. Make sure the new furniture can fit through the front door and in the RV. Also, look to see what’s left behind when you clear away the space. Some RV makers strategically place furniture to cover ugly wiring or other functional eyesores, so you’ll need a plan to re-cover those things.

We’re just skimming the surface, so you’ll definitely want to reach out to some pros and do a little more research before diving into your project. In the end, though, we know all the hard work will be worth it. For some of those trickier tasks, or for general Airstream repairs, stop by Airstream of Utah for additional help.
