Towing Your Travel Trailer in the Rain
Spring is here, which means the rains are coming. While a little rain shouldn’t dampen your desire to travel, wet roads will affect your driving, especially when you’re towing a travel trailer behind your car. Here are some things to do to keep safe when you’re towing your trailer in the rain.
Inspect Everything
Before you set out, you should inspect your trailer and your car for any signs of damage or things that need to be replaced. You’ll especially need to examine the tires and make sure they’re aired up and have sufficient tread depth. Some folks like to swap out their standard tires for special rain tires, but you can drive on normal tires in the rain.
Slow Down
When you’re on the road, don’t be a speed demon! You should never speed while towing, but going slowly becomes especially important when your traction is reduced by wet pavement. Don’t worry about other cars that pass you; stay in your lane and focus on the road ahead.
Give Yourself Space
This is tricky to do, especially since you can’t predict how other drivers might act, but if you can, give yourself a few more seconds of following distance between the front of your car and the back of the car ahead of you. Your towing setup is going to be harder to bring to a full stop, so you need all the space you can get to avoid an accident. Be mindful of drivers that try to invade this space.
