While plenty of folks love to go RV camping in the summer, the winter months offer unexpected calm and beauty. There are plenty of great opportunities for recreation throughout the state, including skiing, hiking, and winter off-roading with ATVs or snowmobiles.

Here in northern Utah, we can get snow into April and May, and cold temperatures can linger long into the spring, so it’s important to be prepared to handle the weather. Here are our tips on how to go RV camping during the winter in the Beehive State.

What to Do

You can view nature or participate in outdoor recreational activities at several sites in Utah, including Bryce Canyon National Park, Lake Powell, Zion National Park, Red Cliffs Conservation Area, and the Arches & Canyonlands National Park.

You’ve got endless options for places to go, as there are lots of year-round campgrounds throughout the state to serve you. Here are a few options:

How to Prepare

If your RV isn’t ready for four-seasons travel, you may need to add some insulation to it to keep you and your family warm and cozy. You can also insulate the vents and check all your door and window seals to keep warm air inside.

Pack plenty of warm clothes for layering, as well as waterproof snow boots or hiking boots, insulated gloves, scarves, knit hats, and coats. Stash some extra wool blankets in your linen closet and make sure you have plenty of extra nonperishable food, bottled water, and propane, in case you become snowbound somewhere. You’ll want to have additional emergency supplies, like fire extinguishers, a hatchet, rope, duct tape, an emergency radio, batteries, and a multitool.
