Staying Healthy in Your Airstream®
While there are a great many benefits to living full-time or traveling frequently in your Airstream trailer, it can be something of a challenge to stay healthy and fit while you’re on the road. The natural stresses of travel can also wear you down if you aren’t careful. Getting exercise, eating well, letting yourself rest, keeping things clean and monitoring your habits are all important, since neglecting your health can result in a string of sick days, and you might be far from a doctor who can assist you.
Airstream of Utah, located in Salt Lake City, Utah, is your family-owned and -operated local Airstream dealer. Here are some of our recommendations to help you stay healthy while you’re on the road.
Get Some Exercise
One of the most important components of good health is being active, and this may be a challenge when you’re always traveling from place to place. Obviously, you can’t join a gym when you won’t be staying anywhere, so you’ll have to make time and space in your Airstream for working out. Getting some hand weights to lift is easy, as is following exercise, yoga or dance videos on the internet. Of course, camping generally involves going out into nature to hike, swim, kayak or walk the dog, and these activities should be good enough if you’re getting at least 30 minutes of activity a day, five days a week.
Address Your Diet
Eating well is just as important on the road as it is at home. Unfortunately, dining out, gas station snacks and drive-thrus will all prove to be strong temptations. Try to cook more meals in your Airstream kitchen. Stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables at farmer’s markets. Not every meal has to be a big production, either: you can have cold sandwiches and salads for lunch and dinner or batch-cook portions of meat or grains to use the next day. Try to drink more water and tea instead of sugary soda or heavily caffeinated drinks, too, so you can stay properly hydrated.
Rest Up
You might not be getting the best sleep of your life in your Airstream if you’re in loud campgrounds or other noisy areas. Try to do what you can to make sure you’re getting a good night’s sleep. Sleep masks, black-out curtains, white-noise machines and portable fans can all make your bedroom more comfortable. If you’re feeling worn down after a strenuous hike, allow yourself a day to rest up so that your muscles can recuperate.
Clean Your Space
A dirty, messy RV is one that’s more likely to lead to illness over time. Even the accrual of dust can trigger allergies and asthma! Do a thorough cleaning of your Airstream trailer at least once a week, which should include:
- Wiping down all surfaces
- Vacuuming, mopping and sweeping floors
- Laundering linens, towels and curtains
- Going through your fridge to toss out any old food and wipe the shelves
- Addressing mold and mildew before they get out of control
- Taking out trash, compost and recycling
Keeping your RV clean will go a long way towards maintaining the health of you and your fellow passengers.
Additional Tips
There are a few more things you can do to maintain your health. If you’re a smoker, now is the time to cut down significantly and quit, if possible. You don’t need us to tell you about the negative impacts of smoking; suffice to say it’s extremely detrimental to your skin and your lung and heart health and the sooner you can quit, the better you’ll feel.
Those who drink alcohol should monitor their usage to ensure that it doesn’t get out of control. Excess drinking can dehydrate you and negatively affects your liver and can also seriously affect your mental functioning. Limit yourself to no more than 14 units per week, equivalent to six pints of beer or seven glasses of wine, and try to avoid drinking on a daily basis.
Following these tips should help to reduce illness and improve your health while you’re traveling this spring and summer. Searching for Airstreams for sale in northern Utah?
